The initial positive feeling and continued good vibration surround the New Jersey Shore based musical group Messenger Mercury. This band of four individuals initially came together in early 2006, at a rehearsal space in Red Bank, NJ. The group formed shortly after drummer Dan Stark and Bassist Russell Eia met while working at a local restaurant. Both being between bands at the time, they began meeting for improvised jam sessions in 2005; a musical chemistry was immediately evident, based largely in intricate rhythmic choices and a mutual desire for experimentation. Stark brought into the band talented local guitarist Matthew Kloufetos; Eia asked his long-time musical collaborator and friend Michael Carlo to front the group and play rhythm guitar. It was apparent that they all wanted the same thing in song structure and group dynamic; from that initial positive reaction to each other, the band was born. Though each grew up surrounded by rock music, which undoubtedly inspires the core of their sound, there is a clear influence and acknowledgement of other musical forms within their songs, most notably jazz, funk, salsa, and progressive. The band credits their initial success in establishing their sound and presence to a continued appreciation for each other as friends and players. They are dedicated above all to the notion that music can be something more than just organized sounds, that it can be a total physical, emotional, ethereal experience. |
